The Relationship Between Smoking And Public Health Essay

This assignment analyses the relation between smoking and public health and how it makes an impact to individuals’ health and well-being. Smoking can be defined as the act of inhaling and exhaling of the smoke produced by the combustion of a component usually from a tobacco. The most common ways of smoking are in the form of cigarettes, cigars or pipes, electronic cigarettes and via shishas or hookahs (WHO, 2016). Although there are different ways of smoking, they all harm in the same way as these contain adverse chemicals such as nicotine which are highly addictive. Moreover, sm oking is considered as the dominant cause of premature deaths and preventable diseases leading to approximately 96,000 deaths in a year in the UK. With this evidence, smoking can be indicated as hugely accountable to cause negative influences and risk to health of the public and healthy living as it can lead to several chronic illnesses such as cancer, heart disease, stroke and many more life-threaten ing health conditions (ASH, 2016). In the Acheson Report (Acheson, 1988), public health is illustrated as the art and science of avoiding disease, extending life and promoting healthy lifestyles through the organised community efforts. It emphasises on investigating and diagnosing health issues in order to protect people’s health and make the environment healthy for individuals to live (Detels et al., 2015).
